Many years ago one of the technical institutes here upgraded its name and status to that of a university. In a possibly apocryphal story, one of the proposals was "Curtin University of New Technology", but fortunately someone on the committee was awake enough to notice the resulting acronym, so they settled on just "Curtin University of Technology".
